I've been carrying this guilt for almost a year. A colleague and I applied for the same promotion. Honestly, she was more qualified and worked harder than I did. The only difference is that I had a closer relationship with the manager.
I got the promotion and she didn't.
Everyone congratulated me, but deep down I know she deserved it more. She eventually resigned and found another job. Every time I sit in my office, I wonder if I would still be here if the process had been completely fair.
